Virus averted, so far as I can tell

First, I want to thank everyone who offered help yesterday while I was in panic mode.

It turns out the Antivirus System Pro trojan is an utter bitch to get rid of. Even if you turn off your system restore settings, it renews itself every time you boot up your computer, unless you block about a dozen web addresses in your hosts file. Before this happened, I didn't even know my computer had a hosts file!

Anyway, after about seven hours and half a million restarts, I think I have gotten rid of it. Just to be sure, I scan and scrub my system with Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials each time I log on; both have setups that look for this trojan in particular. Finally, this morning, a scan with both showed my system to be clean. As a side note, I am utterly pissed that my Symantec Antivirus program--which I update at least once a week--did not catch this.

Just to be sure, I also run an MS-DOS application called Rkill each time I boot my system up; this quick little program shuts down any malware processes that are running in the background that I might not see.

Bleah. I would not wish a nightmare like this on my worst enemy. Once again, thank you to everyone who sent along their advice and help!

Well it's good to hear that you got the virus gone outta your computer and didn't have to buy a new one. ^^
