...as in, mine is. At least for the time being. I'm scrambling to find out what the problem might be, but I know next to nothing about the guts of a computer, so until I can find someone who does, I will just be checking a couple things from work.

All that goddamn data lost. Again. I am not going to save anything until I have a PC I can fucking trust.

My condolences. It must suck to lose data. I'm in a precarious position myself. My PC and its HDs are 5 years old and I have gigs worth of stuff to sort out before I can burn it.

Good luck. *hugs*

Hey, if you need a spare one to do some general surfing from home, I might be able to hook you up for the holidays until you can find/cobble together a better one. It's a dog of a laptop but it beats nothing. :)

Hopefully I won't have to take you up on that. I'm scrambling to find a solution--and if that doesn't work, I have a trusty computer tech in the wings to help out.

Hopefully, this won't be a staggering problem of a few months' duration, but just an inconvenience of a few days.

Thank you very much for your offer, though; if push comes to shove, I may take you up on that.

You know Tib and I live about a mile from you, we could come by and look at it? It is, after all, what Tib does for a living.

Trust me, drleo has suggested that. We are going to fiddle with getting a new boot drive and new cabling, and if that doesn't work, I will probably be humbly begging Tib to take a look at it.

just remeber his weekend shift starts tomorrow so it's better sooner than later - he is rarely up for geeking after 12 hour shifts on fri/sat/sun

This from Tib who says he can't post in your journal here:

Begging not necessary :] and as severe as this sounds (third in a row?) I think I can make the time to help out with this. If you don't grab me today sometime you can get me during the weekend, though if that happens would it bother you to leave the computer here so I could work on it as I can get my head around it but shouldn't take me all weekend.

The data drive should still be okay; same deal as when your machine died before. Dunno about your boot drive, but if you can mount it to a Linux box like we did last major failure, some of that might be salvageable too.

You know, this is the third boot drive to die on this set of cabling--so I am gonna replace that, too, just to be sure.

The boot drive is gone; I turned it in for a trade for a new drive--which, unfortunately, turned out to be a dud, too. Gonna trade that one in after work today, and get new cabling.

Cross your fingers.

Sounds like a plan. There could be an intermittent short.

If you have two cd-r drives and can download a linux software called slax you might be able to salvage some of the data. Slax runs off a cd, no installation required *just doesnt have many drivers that support software*

its worth a shot, was able to salvage some of my hd when windows crashed on me.
