Party of choice? You decide.
This is lifted from a reader comment on The Huffington Post, and the comparisons it raises between the GOP and Democratic Party is nothing short of stunning. As you read through it (if you bother to), keep in mind how the GOP sells itself as the party of morality and defense.

I'm putting it behind an LJ cut, because a) it is a very long (though fascinating and revealing) list and b) because I am being told by some that my LJ is "too political."

For those who cite reason b), I say: too damned bad. This is important to me.

All I can say is that I'm shocked.

And there's the horribly screwed up children of powerful Republican families, such as Susan Smith who drowned her two sons and blamed it on a black man, John Hinckley Jr and Mark Chapman.

Smith's father was an important republican who raised funds for Newt Gingrich and for Pat Robertson's Christian Coalition. Hinckley and Chapman came from wealthy southern republican oil families. Chapman's father was an Amoco executive who was active in Christian organizations like World Vision. Hinckley's family had business ties with the Bush family in Houston going back to the 60's and his brother was a close friend of the president's brother Neil.

There was a hilarious posting possibly on dKos or Huffington that has the specifics on what Limbaugh and Nugent did to avoid the draft. I wish I had saved it.

Hee. I plan to. Even if it gets to the point where it seems no one is listening.

This entry would be a lot more... convincing, I guess, if it tried to show the worst of the Democratic party and could show that they're just not as bad. But it's comparing the best of the Blues with the worst of the Reds, and that's not a very compelling argument.

It's still shocking, however, the huge number of child sex allegations against the Reds.

I agree. There's a book out there called "Do As I Say Not As I Do" that makes the hypocrisy argument just as strongly against Dems but says very little about Republicans, sweeping William Bennett's and Rush Limbaugh's addictions under the rug, for example.

This reminds me of the allegation that all Catholic priests are pedophiles just because a few were. A few bad apples can spoil the bunch.

Heh. I miss living in Iowa (also known as Baja Minnesota) and being able to vote for Tom Harkin--who has been one of my heroes ever since he gave me a lollipop (at a barbershop where I was getting a haircut) while running for office back in the 70s. Forgive the structure of that sentence; I know it's a mess.

I admit my political bias and agenda here; if Faux News were to do the same, I think I might even respect them a little more for being transparent about something anyone with a clue can see.

As for running for office, gods! I couldn't do it. I am not nearly phony enough to do so successfully in this country. I would be a long-haired, gay hippie Paul Wellstone on crack. o(:o)

Oh, I plan to...

...until the NSA drags me off.

*engage sarcasm mode*

Oh, come on, you're just one of them left-wing liberal NPR types trying to make the Republican party look bad! (As if they needed any help) You must be against good clean livin', family values and big SUV's! Practically an enemy of the state!

Wow! It's like you've known me my entire life! o.O

I feel the need to argue with the point of Strom Thurmond being a "racist pedophile" also, Strom was a Democrat for some years, and only went Republican 10 years later into his career.

Please note, that the affair between Strom and his maid (she was 16, not 15, and Strom was 22 this time) Happened in 1925, it wasn't uncommon for a man to be involved with a girl that young. Also, how was Strom Thurmond racist? Because he believe in Segregation? I know this may sound shocking, Lou, but not all the people who were pro-segregation were pro because they "hated black people." Strom actually believed that both races would benefit most by being seperate, that it was too soon to intergrate, though later on, Strom would admit that he was wrong in his decision to support Segergation.

And the thing about his illegimate daughter? Meh, thats common knowledge, everybody knew he had one.

Beoweasel, I respect and honor your right to make your point. But the quickest way to get me to dismiss you entirely is to try to put words in my mouth:

I know this may sound shocking, Lou, but not all the people who were pro-segregation were pro because they "hated black people."

This is insulting. Implying that I am so stupid as to paint this complex issue in broad, black-and-white strokes is unfair and beneath intelligent discourse. It is also condescending.

I posted this list as a point of interest and discussion; I am not its author. I don't know why the original authors included John Wayne, to be honest; probably just a case of celebrity name-dropping.

And why are you mentioning John Wayne? True he was a conservative, and yeah, he didn't serve in the military, but the man's been dead for 30 years :P
